Roberto Álvarez is appointed ambassador emeritus after his departure from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, has formalized the appointment of Roberto Álvarez as ambassador emeritus, after accepting his resignation as Minister of Foreign Affairs. This transition is part of the strategic adjustments made by the president in various government institutions this August 16th.
The official designation is based on the provisions of Article 77 of Law 630-16, which governs the structure and functioning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dominican Foreign Service. With this move, the Executive Branch recognizes the work performed by Álvarez, who led national diplomacy since the beginning of Abinader’s administration in August 2020.
A balance of diplomatic management
During his tenure at the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez was the visible face of the country’s foreign policy, assuming the Dominican representation in multilateral forums and various international organizations. His management was characterized by active participation in the defense of sovereign interests and the strengthening of global strategic alliances.
Roberto Álvarez’s career and experience
Álvarez’s career has been deeply linked to the field of international relations and human rights. Before his time at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he stood out for his previous experience in the foreign service, highlighting his role as:
- Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the Organization of American States (OAS) between 2005 and 2008.
- Consultant and specialist in international organizations focused on the respect for fundamental rights.
Roberto Álvarez’s vast experience in diplomacy and his focus on international affairs have been fundamental pillars in his performance as a public official, marking a significant stage in the country’s foreign policy.
Following this restructuring, the Executive Branch has appointed Víctor Ito Bisonó to take the reins of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Roberto Álvarez closes his chapter as foreign minister to begin his new stage as ambassador emeritus.
