Trump announces plans to declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory following tensions with Iran

In a move that drastically intensifies the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, United States President Donald Trump has stated his intention to declare the Strait of Hormuz as “United States territory.” This announcement comes at a critical moment, just before the ceasefire agreed upon between both nations expires on August 17th.

During a political event in Long Island, New York, the president asserted that control of the maritime route is total. According to his statements, once Iran’s defeat is finalized, passage through this strategic area will be strictly subject to Washington’s authorization.

After we finish defeating Iran, which is being defeated very badly, very soon I will declare the Strait of Hormuz United States territory, in essence. We have a blockade. No ship passes unless we want it to pass.

A high-tension scenario

The stance of the U.S. administration has hardened in recent days. Both Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth have reaffirmed the strategy of maintaining an indefinite blockade and strict economic isolation over Iranian territory. This tactic seeks to consolidate the position of control that, according to the White House, has been achieved following the military operations executed since February.

For its part, Tehran maintains a firm and opposing stance. Mohsen Rezai, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has conditioned the reopening of the strait on a series of demands that include:

  • The definitive cessation of the war and the naval blockade.
  • The release of currently frozen Iranian assets.
  • The signing of a comprehensive ceasefire that also encompasses the conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza.

Strategic importance of the strait

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, remains the nerve center for global energy supply, functioning as an essential route for the transport of oil and gas. With the expiration of the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17th—which established the cessation of military operations—the future of this maritime route becomes the epicenter of international uncertainty.
