San Juan takes a step into the future: Construction begins on modern UFHEC campus and ARCASA Plaza
President Luis Abinader led the groundbreaking ceremony this Friday for the construction of the new campus of the Federico Henríquez y Carvajal University (UFHEC) and the ARCASA Plaza in San Juan. This ambitious project, which covers an area of 19,000 square meters, represents a fundamental pillar for the economic and academic development of the southern region of the country.
The project not only seeks to strengthen the higher education offering, but also to boost local commerce, foster entrepreneurship, and generate new sources of employment for the youth and families of San Juan, marking a milestone in the province’s progress.
Academic innovation at the service of the region
The rector of UFHEC, Alberto Ramírez, emphasized that this educational center is a direct commitment to the potential of the area. The new campus will feature a seven-level building designed to house high-demand and technologically relevant degree programs, such as:
- Software Engineering and Cybersecurity.
- Artificial Intelligence.
- Biotechnology and Precision Agriculture.
- Dentistry.
The incorporation of these degree programs will allow young people in the South to access specialized training without having to travel to other parts of the country, linking academia with the demands of the current productive market.

A comprehensive development complex
Strategically located on Francisco del Rosario Sánchez highway, at the corner of Circunvalación Thomas F. Reilly, the complex will be a point of convergence. While the academic building will integrate laboratories, dental clinics, and modern classrooms, the ARCASA Plaza will offer a range of commercial services, including a hypermarket, banking entities, pharmacies, and telecommunications centers, as well as accessible facilities for people with disabilities.
Education-driven transformation
During the ceremony, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Rafael Santos Badía, highlighted that this investment is part of the government’s vision to transform the country. The official emphasized that the commitment to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) areas ensures that future professionals in San Juan will have the necessary skills to access high-quality jobs.
For her part, Governor Ana María Castillo expressed her satisfaction with the positive impact this project will have on the community, describing the moment as a stage of hope and growth for all the inhabitants of the province. The blessing of the project was led by Father Ramón Emilio del Rosario Adames, who highlighted the importance of this joint effort for social well-being.
