Weather forecast: Trough and tropical wave will cause rains in much of the country

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has issued a report warning of atmospheric instability conditions for this Monday in the Dominican Republic. The incidence of a trough and an active tropical wave will cause downpours, thunderstorms, and wind gusts in various provinces, with the afternoon being the period of greatest activity.

From the early hours of the morning, cloudiness and scattered precipitation have been observed in provinces such as Samaná, La Altagracia, El Seibo, Monte Plata, and María Trinidad Sánchez. As the day progresses, these conditions are expected to intensify and move toward other areas of the national territory.

Provinces under surveillance for possible flooding

Due to the intensity of the forecasted rains, Indomet has established meteorological alert levels in response to the risk of flooding in rivers, streams, and creeks, as well as potential flooding in vulnerable sectors. The areas under surveillance include:

  • La Altagracia
  • La Romana
  • El Seibo
  • Hato Mayor
  • San Pedro de Macorís
  • Samaná
  • Greater Santo Domingo

Authorities urge the population residing in high-risk areas to stay informed through official bulletins and to avoid attempting to cross bodies of water that have elevated levels due to the rains.

Monitoring of atmospheric phenomena

The meteorological agency is keeping a tropical wave linked to the remnants of Storm Dolly, located east of Puerto Rico, under strict observation. Although its probability of cyclonic development is low, less than 20%, it is expected to bring significant rainfall accumulations to the northeastern and northern regions of the Caribbean.

Similarly, a tropical disturbance located in the Gulf of America is being monitored with a 70% probability of cyclonic formation. However, due to its current trajectory and location, this phenomenon does not pose a direct threat to the Dominican Republic.

Details for Greater Santo Domingo

For the National District and the municipalities of Santo Domingo Norte, Oeste, and Este, the forecast indicates cloud increases with downpours, thunderstorms, and wind gusts, especially towards midday and the afternoon. Temperatures will remain hot, ranging between 24 °C and 26 °C for the lows, and reaching highs of up to 36 °C.
