Changes in the dugout: Dan Wilson will not continue at the helm of the Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners organization has begun a restructuring process ahead of the 2027 season. Dan Wilson, who served as the team’s manager, announced this Sunday that he will not return to his duties for the upcoming campaign, a decision that was communicated to staff and players moments before the final game of the regular season.

The announcement was made during an internal meeting, hours before Seattle’s 7-3 victory over the Angels in the 162nd game of the season. After the conclusion of the match, the end of Wilson’s tenure at the helm of the team was officially confirmed.

Adjustments to the coaching staff

Significant changes are anticipated within the coaching staff that accompanied Wilson. However, the pitching strategy will maintain a line of continuity, as both the director of pitching strategy, Trent Blank, and the pitching coach, Pete Woodworth, are expected to remain in their respective positions within the organization.

A disappointing season for Seattle

The Mariners concluded 2026 with a performance that fell far short of their stated goals. With a winning record below .500 by a margin of more than 10 games, the team had to settle for third place in the American League West Division.

Despite having started the year as one of the favorites to dominate their division, the club faced multiple obstacles that prevented them from achieving the expected success:

  • Persistent offensive struggles throughout much of the schedule.
  • Lack of consistency in the starting rotation.
  • Evident wear and tear on the bullpen during the second half of the season.
  • Deficiencies in defensive performance.

Wilson’s departure marks the end of a chapter that began in August 2024, when he took the reins of the team following the exit of Scott Servais, marking his first experience as a full-time manager in professional baseball.

The immediate future of the organization

With the departure confirmed, the Mariners’ management is preparing for an offseason filled with crucial decisions. It is expected that the president of baseball operations, Jerry Dipoto, and general manager, Justin Hollander, will remain at the helm of administrative leadership and provide additional details in a press conference scheduled for this week.

The Seattle organization is now focused on the search for new technical leadership that will allow them to resolve current questions and return the team to a competitive path by 2027.
