Donald Trump confirms plans to meet with Kim Jong-un before the end of the year

Former United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his intention to hold a new meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un before the end of the current year. The statement was made by Trump himself during a tour of renovations at the White House, where he confirmed to the media that preparations for this summit are underway.

Yes, I will meet with him.

During his speech, Trump offered details about Pyongyang’s weapons capabilities, noting that the North Korean regime possesses 57 high-power nuclear weapons. Although he regretted that the situation has reached this point, he insisted that his personal relationship with Kim Jong-un is fundamental to maintaining regional stability and improving global security.

The stance from North Korea

The former US president’s announcement comes in a context of contradictory statements from the North Korean leadership. Kim Yo-jong, the North Korean leader’s sister, stated she was unaware of any recent contact between the two leaders, although she stressed that the personal ties between her brother and Trump remain at an excellent level.

Despite the uncertainty regarding direct communications, the North Korean leader’s sister highlighted that Kim Jong-un retains positive feelings toward the American politician, marking a distinction between personal diplomacy and official bureaucratic processes.

Adjustments to military exercises with South Korea

In parallel to these diplomatic approaches, a significant reduction in the joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, has been confirmed. By direct order of Trump, the drills were shortened, ending on August 21 instead of the original date of the 27th.

  • The decision to scale back the maneuvers was made under the premise of fostering a climate conducive to dialogue.
  • The Pentagon assured that, despite the reduction in the scale of the exercises, the necessary operational and defense capability is maintained.
  • The South Korean government admitted that it was not notified in advance about this drastic reduction in the duration of the military drills.

Despite these gestures, North Korean authorities have maintained a critical tone, describing the military maneuvers as an open threat to regional security, regardless of their duration or scale. Currently, the United States maintains a presence of 28,500 troops in South Korean territory, keeping constant vigilance following the Korean War.
