Railway incident in Sussex: Train derails amidst an intense heatwave
A passenger train operated by the company Southern Rail suffered a dramatic derailment this Thursday in the town of Lewes, located in the county of East Sussex, in the south of England. The train, which was traveling between Haywards Heath and Lewes, saw its three rear carriages come off the tracks and end up overturned, causing a significant disruption to the region’s rail service.
Despite the magnitude of the accident, authorities from the Ministry of Transport have confirmed that there are no reports of fatalities or people with serious injuries. Emergency teams quickly arrived at the scene to assist those affected, who managed to leave the damaged train cars on their own, although some passengers suffered minor injuries and superficial cuts.
Impact on service and weather conditions
The derailment has caused a paralysis on several Southern Rail lines, while other routes are facing considerable delays. According to preliminary reports, approximately forty people were initially trapped in the overturned carriages before being successfully rescued by emergency personnel.
The incident coincided with the hottest day recorded in the year 2026, with temperatures reaching 38.1 degrees Celsius in the British capital, severely affecting the area where the event took place.
Although the exact causes that led to the train derailing remain under investigation, authorities do not rule out that extreme weather conditions may have played a significant role in the railway infrastructure. Cleanup efforts and technical analysis continue in the area to normalize train traffic as soon as possible.
