Intense seismic activity shakes the Chocó department in Colombia
The department of Chocó, located in western Colombia, is going through a day of high tension due to a series of seismic movements recorded this Wednesday. According to technical reports, five earthquakes were recorded in an interval of less than an hour, keeping the inhabitants and risk management authorities of the region on alert.
Chronology of seismic movements
The seismic sequence began at 3:12 in the afternoon and lasted until 4:05 p.m., with epicenters concentrated in different municipalities of Chocó:
- Medio San Juan: The first earthquake reached a magnitude of 4.7 at a depth of 40 kilometers. Subsequently, at 3:18 p.m., a third movement of 3.6 was reported in the same area.
- Sipí: At 3:14 p.m., a tremor of magnitude 4.4 was recorded with a depth of 37 kilometers.
- Istmina: The fourth event occurred at 3:55 p.m. with a magnitude of 4.4, followed by a fifth earthquake of 3.3 magnitude that closed the cycle at 4:05 p.m.
Although the movements were perceived in various locations in the west of the country, including the city of Cali, as of the closing of this report, no material damage or human casualties resulting from these events have been reported.
Background and geological context
This recent activity occurs just 24 hours after three other earthquakes were recorded in less than ten minutes in the same area, one of them with a magnitude of 4.9. The region remains under constant observation following the historic 7.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10 in San José del Palmar, which left a tragic toll of 335 dead and was classified as the largest magnitude earthquake in Colombia during the 21st century.
Colombia is a territory of high seismic activity due to its complex geological configuration and the constant interaction of various tectonic plates, which generates a regular frequency of these natural phenomena in different parts of the national geography.
