Rafael Devers ends his season with the Giants: Surgery in sight?
Rafael Devers’ 2026 season has come to an early end. The star Dominican third baseman was placed on the San Francisco Giants’ 60-day injured list due to a persistent core muscle injury that kept him limited for much of the Major League schedule.
Devers will travel to Philadelphia this Monday to undergo a comprehensive evaluation with the renowned Dr. William Meyers. The specialist, who previously treated fellow third baseman Matt Chapman, will determine if the player requires surgery to definitively correct the ailment. According to Giants manager Tony Vitello, said operation could take place as early as this Tuesday if the medical staff deems it necessary.

An offensive power campaign
Despite dealing with physical issues, Devers’ performance was outstanding. The Dominican player closed his participation with impactful numbers, consolidating himself as San Francisco’s offensive figure:
- .258 batting average and an .865 OPS.
- Team lead with 37 home runs, the highest figure for a Giants player since Barry Bonds reached 45 in 2004.
- 98 RBIs, the most recorded by a franchise player since 2013.
Devers’ commitment to the organization was clear as he played in 148 of the team’s first 149 games, not taking a day off until the final stretch of the season. With a contract guaranteed through the year 2033, the absolute priority for both the player and management is to ensure his full recovery for 2027 spring training, where he is expected to once again lead the heart of the lineup alongside Bryce Eldridge.
Roster moves
Faced with the loss of Devers, who joins an injured list that includes names like Willy Adames and Matt Chapman, the Giants have called up outfielder Scott Bandura from Triple-A Sacramento. The young prospect, selected in the 2023 Draft, made his official Major League debut this Sunday, marking the beginning of a new opportunity as the team adjusts its pieces to close out the season.
