Man arrested for death threats against the President of Costa Rica
Costa Rican authorities have managed to capture a 27-year-old man, identified by the surname Villalobos, on suspicion of having issued death threats against President Laura Fernández through social media. According to the report from the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), the individual allegedly posted intimidating messages on May 8, coinciding with the presidential inauguration ceremony, in which he warned about the use of firearms against the president.
The arrest operation was carried out through a raid on a home located in Desamparados, Alajuela province. During the intervention, judicial agents proceeded to seize various electronic devices, which will be subjected to forensic analysis to further the investigations. Currently, the suspect is at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office to face the relevant judicial proceedings.
A worrying pattern of threats
This event marks the fourth arrest recorded this year in Costa Rican territory linked to intimidation against President Fernández. The country’s Penal Code classifies the crime of aggravated threats with penalties ranging from six months to two years in prison, a measure that seeks to deter this type of conduct against public officials.
- Key background: On March 11, two individuals, identified as Trejos and Gamboa, were apprehended for issuing threats against former president Rodrigo Chaves and then president-elect Laura Fernández.
- Previous case: On February 4, another woman was arrested on similar charges while Fernández still held the status of president-elect.
