Intense heat and Sahara dust will dominate the weather in the Dominican Republic this weekend
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has issued a report on weather conditions for this weekend, highlighting a trend of scarce rainfall across much of the national territory. This atmospheric behavior is mainly due to the incursion of a dry air mass, combined with the presence of moderate concentrations of dust from the Sahara.
Although the environment will remain mostly stable, meteorological authorities do not rule out the possibility of isolated showers during the afternoon due to local effects. These passing rains could be recorded in provinces such as San Pedro de Macorís, San Cristóbal, Independencia, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, and specific sectors of Greater Santo Domingo.
High temperatures and preventive recommendations
The predominant factor for the coming days will be extreme heat. Maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 34 °C and 36 °C, while minimums will remain between 24 °C and 26 °C. Given this outlook, Indomet reiterates the importance of following self-care measures to avoid heatstroke or dehydration:
- Maintain constant hydration through frequent water intake.
- Use light-colored, lightweight, and preferably loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak radiation hours, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Prioritize staying in ventilated and cool places, paying special attention to children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
The combination of Saharan dust and low atmospheric humidity will continue to be the limiting factor for the formation of significant rainfall, even with the presence of a trough that will affect the country during Sunday and Monday.
Outlook for the start of the week
For Monday, the weather outlook will remain similar. Despite the influence of a trough, the dry air mass and Saharan dust will continue to curb significant rainfall. Only scattered showers or afternoon downpours are expected in specific areas of the Central Mountain Range, as well as in the northeast, northwest, and southeast regions.
In Greater Santo Domingo, the start of the week is expected to have scattered clouds and a consistently hot environment, keeping the sky with a slightly grayish hue due to suspended dust particles.
