Mourning in Dominican sports: Historic former athlete Donato Vásquez Reyes passes away

Sports in the Dominican Republic are in mourning following the passing of Donato Vásquez Reyes, an emblematic figure who left an indelible mark on the country’s athletic history. Vásquez Reyes, who was the distinguished flag bearer for the Dominican delegation at the XII Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 1974, is remembered by the sports community as an exceptional athlete and a benchmark of perseverance.

His mortal remains are being waked at the Blandino funeral home on Abraham Lincoln Avenue, where family, friends, and colleagues from the sports world are gathering to bid him a final farewell.

A trajectory marked by excellence and versatility

Born on December 6, 1951, in Barahona, Donato Vásquez Reyes demonstrated a natural talent for various disciplines from an early age. Before establishing himself in athletics, he successfully ventured into baseball and volleyball. At the age of 16, his performance as a pitcher was key to Barahona being crowned champion in the 1968 regional youth baseball tournament. Later, his athletic ability led him to join the volleyball team at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (UCMM) thanks to a sports scholarship.

It was in 1973 when his career took a definitive turn towards track athletics, specializing in the 100 and 200-meter sprints. Among his most important milestones are:

  • Gold medal in the 100 meters and bronze in the 200 meters at the 1973 National Sports Games.
  • Outstanding performance at the 1973 Mexico Youth Games, obtaining gold in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as silver medals in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
  • Recognition as “Athlete of the Year”.
  • Establishment of a national record in the 200-meter dash in 1974 with a time of 21.1 seconds.

One of the most memorable moments of his career occurred during the opening of the Santo Domingo 2003 Pan American Games, when he had the honor of handing the torch to Olympic and world champion Félix Sánchez.

Beyond the slopes: A well-rounded professional

Vásquez Reyes not only stood out in the sports field, but also built a solid academic and professional career. He graduated cum laude in Agronomic Engineering and pursued a master’s degree in Forest Resources at the University of Idaho, United States.

During his time in the Dominican public administration, he served as the head of Forest Policy at the then-Undersecretariat of Forest Resources. After establishing his residence in the United States, he continued to be a benchmark of integrity and dedication, leaving a legacy that combines sporting success with excellence in professional and academic development.
