Mourning in Dominican sports: Historic former athlete Donato Vásquez Reyes passes away
Sports in the Dominican Republic are in mourning following the sad passing of Donato Vásquez Reyes, an emblematic figure who left an indelible mark on the country’s athletic history. Vásquez Reyes, remembered for being the flag bearer of the national delegation at the historic XII Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 1974, departed leaving a legacy of discipline and excellence.
The national sports community has expressed its deep sorrow at the passing of one of the most outstanding athletes of his generation. His remains are being waked at the Blandino funeral home on Abraham Lincoln Avenue, where loved ones and figures from the sports world are gathering to bid their final farewell.
A career marked by versatility and success
Born on December 6, 1951, in Barahona, Donato Vásquez Reyes demonstrated an innate talent for various disciplines from an early age. Before establishing himself in athletics, he successfully ventured into baseball and volleyball. At 16, his arm as a pitcher was key to Barahona winning the regional youth baseball championship in 1968, while his skill in volleyball allowed him to obtain a scholarship at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (UCMM).
Starting in 1973, his focus shifted exclusively to athletics, specializing in the 100 and 200-meter sprint events. His impact was immediate:
- Gold in 100 meters and bronze in 200 meters at the 1973 National Sports Games.
- Outstanding participation in the Youth Games in Mexico, achieving gold in 100 and 200 meters, as well as silver medals in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
- Recognition as Athlete of the Year.
- Establishment of a national record in the 200-meter dash in 1974 with a time of 21.1 seconds.
One of the highlights of his career occurred in 2003, when during the opening ceremony of the Santo Domingo 2003 Pan American Games, he had the honor of handing the torch to star Olympic champion Félix Sánchez, thus uniting two generations of sports legends.
Beyond the slopes: A well-rounded professional
Vásquez Reyes’ legacy was not limited solely to his successes on the playing field. His commitment to self-improvement led him to graduate cum laude in Agronomic Engineering, complementing his academic training with a master’s degree in Forest Resources at the University of Idaho, United States.
In his professional capacity within the Dominican territory, he held key roles as the head of Forest Policy at the former Ministry of Environment. After establishing his residence in the United States, his passing leaves a significant void, being remembered as a benchmark who knew how to balance high athletic performance with academic and professional development.
