Government enacts historic regulation to oversee baseball in the Dominican Republic
The Executive Branch has marked a turning point in national sports with the enactment of Decree 601-26. This regulation establishes a comprehensive regulatory framework for professional and recreational baseball, as well as development academies, seeking to raise standards of transparency, safety, and order throughout the industry.
With this measure, the Dominican State assumes an active role in the oversight of the various actors that make up the baseball ecosystem, from players and coaches to scouts, agencies, and representatives, guaranteeing a more equitable and protected environment.
The role of the National Baseball Commissioner
The Office of the National Baseball Commissioner, under the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, shall be the authority responsible for executing and ensuring compliance with these regulations. To achieve efficient management, the institution has been structured into two key areas:
- Technical Direction: Focused on infrastructure, supervision of academies, training programs, and anti-doping policies.
- Baseball Regulation Direction: In charge of the registration and administrative supervision of everyone involved in the system.
National Baseball System Registry
One of the fundamental pieces of this regulation is the creation of the National Baseball System Registry. This tool will allow the State to have official and updated control of leagues, teams, academies, and technical personnel. The objective is clear: to certify and verify the legitimacy of every actor operating within the national territory.
Priority protection for prospects and minors
The regulation places special emphasis on the best interests of the child, requiring decent conditions for food, housing, and health, in addition to safeguarding the right to education and preventing any form of abuse or overtraining.
Academies must now comply with strict safety and health standards. Likewise, the goal is to eliminate deceptive practices during the recruitment process, ensuring that athletic development does not compromise the overall well-being of young prospects.
Integrity and transparency in the field
Beyond protecting talent, the decree aims to strengthen the integrity of the competition. To this end, direct measures have been implemented against match-fixing, conflicts of interest, and the use of prohibited substances.
