First anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s passing commemorated with event in Utah
One year after the tragic event that claimed the life of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the organization Turning Point USA held an emotional commemorative act at the Utah Valley University (UVU) facilities. The event, which brought together hundreds of followers at the same stage where the movement’s founder was shot, served to honor his memory and political legacy.
During the day, attendees participated in prayers and religious-themed messages. One of the focal points was the unveiling of a sculpture that portrays Kirk in his characteristic debate pose. Although the possibility of installing a permanent memorial on campus is being considered, university authorities are still in discussions to define the final location of the piece.
Suspension of activities and student controversy
To facilitate the tribute, the UVU administration decided to suspend classes for the day, granting the academic community a space for reflection. Despite the solemnity of the act, the public university’s decision to rent out its spaces for this event generated friction.
Student groups, including members of Students for a Democratic Society, expressed their rejection, arguing that the event should have been held off-campus due to the emotional impact the attack left on the students. Critical stances also focused on questioning the political legacy of the late activist.
Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox issued an official proclamation declaring September 10th as Charlie Kirk Day, urging citizens to always defend their political convictions through dialogue and away from violence.

Charlie Kirk lost his life at 31 years old after being shot in the neck during a live broadcast at the aforementioned university. The alleged attacker, identified as Tyler Robinson, turned himself in to authorities days after the incident and is currently facing a judicial process where the possibility of the death penalty is being evaluated; to date, the accused has pleaded not guilty.
Following the passing, the leadership of Turning Point USA was assumed by Erika Kirk, the activist’s widow. Under her management, the organization has continued with its political agenda, although analysts point out that the movement is still in the process of finding a figure who can reach the level of influence and recognition that its founder possessed.
