Donald Trump criticizes Harry and Meghan’s return to the British monarchy
Former United States President Donald Trump recently spoke out about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the United Kingdom, after having resided in California for six years. In a statement from the White House, the former president was blunt in expressing his disapproval of the reception the British royal family has given the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“I am happy about it. I was never a fan of hers,” Trump declared when asked by the press about this change of temporary residence. The politician did not hide his critical stance regarding the couple’s trajectory since they decided to step back from their institutional duties in 2020.
Criticism focused on the lack of respect for the Crown
For Trump, the conduct of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been, in his words, “tremendously disrespectful” toward the monarchical institution. His remarks were directed primarily at Meghan Markle, questioning her behavior toward both the late Queen Elizabeth II and the current monarch, Charles III.
“I didn’t like how she acted. I thought it was tremendously disrespectful to the Queen and to King Charles,” stated the former president.
Conversely, Trump took the opportunity to highlight the personal ties he cultivated with the royal family. He claimed to have maintained a very close relationship with Elizabeth II and noted that he has known King Charles III for many years, maintaining a good rapport with both.
A firm stance on “Megxit”
When asked if he would have allowed the couple’s return to the bosom of the royal family after years of tensions and controversial statements, Trump was blunt: “If I were the royal family, I wouldn’t have taken them back”.
Harry and Meghan, along with their children Archie and Lilibet, landed back on British soil this past August 26th. It is important to remember that this move does not imply that the Duke and Duchess are resuming their official duties within the structure of the Royal Household. According to reports, the couple plans to stay in a private property, while maintaining their main base in Montecito, California.
This is not the first time that Trump has spoken out about the couple. Over the years, he has maintained a tense public relationship with Meghan Markle and has repeatedly questioned Prince Harry’s immigration status on U.S. soil, although he recently ruled out any intention of pursuing deportation actions against him.
