Cuban athletes begin migration processes after Santo Domingo 2026 Central American Games

The situation of the Cuban athletes who decided to separate from their delegation during the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo has taken a new turn. Two of the five athletes involved have taken a decisive step by appearing before the Refugee Office of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) in the Dominican Republic, with the firm purpose of regularizing their legal status in the country.

The news was disseminated through the “Azúcar con Libertad” platform, a space that has closely followed the process of these athletes who chose not to return to their nation after concluding their participation in the regional event.

Yasmani Álvarez seeks to legalize his status

Among the athletes who have formalized their application, softball player Yasmani Álvarez stands out. According to reports, Álvarez became the second athlete to approach immigration authorities to begin the necessary procedures to allow him to settle legally on Dominican soil.

The athlete expressed remarkable calmness after being attended to by Immigration staff, highlighting the professional and humane treatment received during the process, despite the initial tension caused by the uncertainty of his current situation.

This administrative procedure is carried out individually, where each case is evaluated under the guidelines established by the Refugee Office and the current immigration regulations in the Dominican Republic.

Context of the Cuban delegation

So far, the defection of five members of the Cuban delegation who were present at the multi-sport event has been reported. Although the information has circulated widely, the Dominican authorities are maintaining a reserved approach regarding the identities and specific details of each case, ensuring due process for those seeking protection or immigration regularization.

From Alofoke Deportes we will continue to monitor the evolution of these cases and any official update that arises regarding the situation of the Cuban athletes who have decided to embark on a new stage in Dominican territory.
