Fedom inaugurates the 6th U6 National Championship dedicated to Welington Castillo

The Dominican Baseball Federation (Fedom) has kicked off its development tournament calendar for the 2026 season. The main event to start things off is the “6th National U6 Championship Frank Camilo Category,” a competition that pays tribute to the former Major League player and current member of the national team’s coaching staff, Welington Castillo.

The sporting event, designed for young talents between 5 and 6 years old, will take place this Sunday, August 23rd. The venue chosen for the display of future stars is the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, specifically at Play Number 3 “Héctor Tito Pereyra”, with activities starting at 9:00 in the morning.

A recognition of leadership and values

The choice of Welington Castillo as the central figure of this edition responds to his impeccable professional career and his human quality. Juan Núñez, president of Fedom, highlighted that the Executive Committee’s decision was unanimous in considering the former catcher as a role model for new generations.

Welington Castillo is an icon for the Dominican Republic; he is one of those people who serves as an example to follow for children, young people, and also for adults. On and off the field, he has proven to be a leader who has very high values to exhibit for everyone.

Participation record and national development

This tournament marks a milestone for Fedom, by registering the participation of 528 children distributed across 33 teams from various regions of the country. This figure represents a record for the institution in its constant effort to promote the practice of baseball from childhood.

The list of participating teams reflects the national scope of the initiative, featuring representatives from provinces such as La Vega (current champions), San Pedro de Macorís, Santiago, Valverde, Duarte, San Cristóbal, La Altagracia, and the National District, as well as various local leagues from Santo Domingo and Boca Chica, among others.

Fedom, together with the U8 and U10 Nationals, continues to promote these development categories to ensure that baseball reaches every corner of the national territory. The event has the strategic support of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (Miderec), the State Economic Canteens, and the Panorama Media Group.
