Tigst Assefa Sets New World Record at the London Marathon

Ethiopian athlete Tigst Assefa has once again made history in athletics, winning the women’s division of the London Marathon this Sunday with an impressive time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 41 seconds, setting a new world record. Assefa, who already held the best mark in women’s marathons, surpassed her own record, demonstrating her dominance in the competition. In a close final, she prevailed over Kenyans Hellen Obiri (2:15:53) and Joyciline Jepkosgei (2:15:55). This triumph represents the fourth major title for the African long-distance runner in renowned marathons, solidifying her position as one of the most outstanding figures in world athletics.

Sabastian Sawe Sets New Record in the Men’s Category

In the men’s category, Kenyan Sabastian Sawe also made history by setting a new marathon world record, stopping the clock at 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds. With this mark, Sawe becomes the fastest runner in the history of an official marathon event.

Sawe surpassed the previous record of his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum (2:00:35 in Chicago 2023), crossing the finish line ahead of Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha (1:59:41) and Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo (2:00:28).

Festive Atmosphere and High Participation in the London Marathon

This year’s London Marathon was characterized by favorable weather conditions, with temperatures close to 16 degrees, and a massive public attendance. The event had a record participation of nearly 60,000 runners, creating a festive atmosphere with costumes and enthusiasm from the fans. Among the outstanding performances, the Spaniard Marta Galimany finished in tenth place with a time of 2:27:38, while the Uruguayan Julia Paternain achieved eighth position with 2:25:47. The London Marathon reaffirmed its status as one of the most important competitions in world athletics, with historic records and a high level of competition.
