Tigst Assefa Sets New World Record at the London Marathon
The Ethiopian Tigst Assefa has once again written her name in the history of athletics by conquering the London Marathon this Sunday, setting a new world record in the women’s division.
Assefa, who already held the best world record in women’s marathons, surpassed her own record, setting an impressive time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 41 seconds.
The competition was intense, with Assefa outperforming Kenyans Hellen Obiri (2:15:53) and Joyciline Jepkosgei (2:15:55) in a close finish.
This triumph marks the fourth major title for the African long-distance runner in prestigious marathons, solidifying her position as one of the most outstanding figures in world athletics.Sabastian Sawe Sets New Men’s World Record
The London Marathon day was also memorable in the men’s category, where Kenyan Sabastian Sawe made history.
Sawe stopped the timer at 1:59:30, setting a new world record in the marathon and becoming the fastest runner in history in an official race.
The Kenyan athlete surpassed the previous record of his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum (2:00:35 in Chicago 2023), crossing the finish line ahead of Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha (1:59:41) and Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo (2:00:28).Festive Atmosphere and High Participation in the London Marathon
The event had favorable weather conditions, with temperatures close to 16 degrees, and a massive public attendance on the streets of London.
This year’s edition recorded a record participation with nearly 60,000 runners, creating a festive atmosphere characterized by costumes and enthusiasm.
Among the outstanding performances, the Spanish Marta Galimany finished tenth with 2:27:38, while the Uruguayan Julia Paternain finished in eighth position with a time of 2:25:47.
