Following the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10th, leaving a regrettable toll of victims and significant material damage, the world of sports has once again demonstrated its capacity for mobilization and social commitment. Faced with the magnitude of the tragedy, athletes, clubs, and institutions have made their resources available to support the hardest-hit communities.
Colombian athletes at the forefront of the emergency
The response from national athletes has been immediate and direct in the disaster zones. Sports figures have set aside competition to join in the relief efforts:
- Walmer Pacheco: The Deportivo Pereira captain voluntarily joined the rescue and debris removal brigades in his city, in addition to leading donation collection campaigns for the affected families.
- Gustavo Sánchez: The prominent artistic swimmer and world medalist moved his efforts to Cali, where he actively participated as a volunteer rescuer, urging citizens to join the humanitarian cause.
