UNICARIBE and ProCompetencia seal a strategic alliance to boost competitiveness in the Dominican Republic

In an effort to foster economic growth and the country’s sustainability, the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE) and the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (ProCompetencia) have formalized an institutional cooperation agreement. This alliance seeks to integrate academia with public policy to strengthen the culture of free competition in the national market.

The event, held at the UNICARIBE campus, was attended by academic authorities and representatives of the public sector. The university rector, Dr. Ricardo Ramírez Mendoza, highlighted the relevance of these ties for the training of professionals prepared for the challenges of the current economic environment. Following this, the chancellor of UNICARIBE, Dr. José Alejandro Aybar Martín, and the president of the Board of Directors of ProCompetencia, Lic. María Elena Vásquez, proceeded with the official signing of the agreement.

Free competition as a driver of development

During the day, Lic. María Elena Vásquez gave a lecture titled “The importance of free competition for the economic development of the Dominican Republic”. In her presentation, she highlighted that an efficient market is fundamental to foster innovation, increase productivity, and offer better conditions for both consumers and investors.

Promoting competition strengthens market confidence, incentivizes business efficiency, and fosters a more dynamic economic environment—essential elements for raising the country’s competitiveness and attracting investments that drive sustainable growth.

New specialized training opportunities

As an integral part of this agreement, the platform for the Diploma in Competition Law was formally presented. This academic proposal, presented by the Director of E-Learning at UNICARIBE, Lucy Méndez, aims to train professionals in market regulation and good business practices.

Among the personalities who accompanied the event, the following stood out:

  • Lic. Shahily Pimentel, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Educational Foundation.
  • Dr. Altagracia Tavárez, Vice Rector of Interinstitutional Relations.
  • José Beltré Cuevas, Director of Promotion and Competition Advocacy.
  • Elisa González, Academic Vice Rector.
  • Aurora Aquino, Director of Continuing Education.

With this step, UNICARIBE reaffirms its vision of leading initiatives that link academic training with the country’s strategic needs, promoting ethical professionals committed to Dominican socioeconomic development.
