UN committee demands cessation of attacks against civilians in Lebanon
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has issued a stern warning regarding the conflict in Lebanon. The international body emphasized that situations of war do not exempt any nation from complying with the prohibition of racial discrimination, urging Israel to immediately halt military operations that affect civilians and essential infrastructure in Lebanese territory.
Activation of urgent alert mechanisms
Given the gravity of the situation, the Committee has activated the “early warning and urgent action” procedure. This measure is reserved for scenarios where there is an imminent risk of serious discrimination. Although the committee’s primary mandate is not to oversee international humanitarian law, the experts emphasized that they have a responsibility to ensure that States respect the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which protects individuals without distinction of ethnic, national, or religious origin.
The exceptional circumstances of a conflict cannot be used to suspend the obligations established in the Convention. Protection against racial discrimination must remain in force at all times.

Humanitarian impact and concern regarding official language
The organization expressed its deep alarm at the human toll the conflict has left to date. According to figures reported by experts, there are more than 4,300 deaths and at least 12,200 people injured, in addition to massive displacement caused by bombings in densely populated areas.
A critical point in the report is the questioning of statements made by Israeli officials. The Committee warned that certain speeches, such as comparisons to the destruction in Gaza or the classification of inhabitants of specific localities as “enemies,” contribute to the dehumanization of population groups. According to the experts, this type of narrative is dangerous, as it could lay the groundwork for justifying collective punishment and legitimizing indiscriminate attacks.
