The Italian Football Federation withdraws its support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election
In a strategic move that shakes the foundations of world football politics, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed that it will not support Gianni Infantino’s candidacy for re-election as FIFA president in 2027. This decision marks a turning point in the relationship between the Italian body and the leadership of international football.
The position adopted by the FIGC seeks direct alignment with UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin. According to the official statement issued by the entity, this change of course responds to deep discrepancies regarding the management of governance, as well as the planning of the calendar and the new international competitions promoted by Infantino.

Giovanni Malagó, president of the FIGC, underscored the importance of maintaining a management model based on transparency and collaboration. The executive emphasized that the federation will maintain its roadmap alongside its European counterparts to safeguard the essence of the beautiful game.

A scenario of growing opposition
Italy’s decision is not an isolated event, but rather adds to a current of discontent that has grown following controversies over FIFA’s plans to attract private investors to its flagship competitions, such as the World Cup. Among the main reasons for the rift are:
- The failed attempt to sell shares of World Cup rights to private investors.
- The growing pressure from confederations such as UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF to review current management.
- The alignment with other European federations, including England, Scotland, and Denmark, which have also withdrawn their support for the Swiss leader.
While opposition to Infantino’s mandate is gaining ground in the European and Asian blocs, the Swiss leader still retains the backing of other organizations. CONMEBOL and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have ratified their support for the president, as have a group of prominent world football legends who have made their support public in recent dates.
