Ukraine blocks the children’s series Masha and the Bear, considering it Russian propaganda

The Ukrainian government has formalized a series of sanctions aimed at restricting the distribution of the popular animated series Masha and the Bear. Authorities in Kyiv maintain that this production, which chronicles the adventures of a little girl and a bear, functions as a tool of Russian cultural influence and propaganda aimed at children.

From the Ukrainian perspective, the figure of the brown bear, the protagonist of the series, is frequently used as a national symbol of Russia, which contributes to projecting a benevolent image of the invading country through content aimed at the little ones.

Measures against the Russian cultural industry

The Minister of Culture, Tetiana Berejna, confirmed the implementation of these restrictions, which directly affect the producers and distributors of the Animaccord studio. According to the presidential decree, these actions provide the necessary legal framework to block the content within Ukrainian territory and request international platforms to limit both the monetization and global distribution of the series.

Russian propaganda has no place on children’s screens, neither in Ukraine nor anywhere else in the world.

The Ukrainian government argues that, behind the guise of children’s entertainment, the series conveys pro-Russian narratives and generates tax revenue that benefits the neighboring country’s economy, which is why they had previously expressed their discontent when platforms like Netflix acquired the rights to new seasons.

The Kremlin’s response

For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was ironic about the Ukrainian authorities’ decision, stating that they have decided to declare war on cartoons. Peskov defended the production, asserting that it has managed to win over global audiences by promoting positive human values.

  • Ukraine seeks to eradicate Russian cultural influence in all sectors.
  • The exclusion extends to areas such as cinema, music, literature, and sports.
  • Ukrainian citizens have drastically reduced their consumption of cultural products from Russia since the start of the conflict in 2022.

This measure is part of a broader strategy by Kyiv to decouple the country from any element that could be perceived as a projection of soft power by Moscow amidst the current war situation.
