Tragedy in the Philippines: Teenager live-streams school shooting

A shocking episode of violence shook the city of Zamboanga, in the southern Philippines, this Tuesday, when a ninth-grade student opened fire inside his high school, leaving a tragic toll of one student dead and several injured. The attacker, approximately 15 years old, decided to take his own life after perpetrating the attack, an event that has reignited the national debate on school safety and the impact of technology on young people.

The incident, which occurred at 7:50 local time, drew the attention of authorities due to its method: the young man used a body camera to live-stream his actions via social media. According to Jonvic Remulla, the Interior Secretary of the Philippines, the recording was reminiscent of the visual perspective of shooter video games, which has raised deep concern regarding the influence of digital content on the behavior of minors.

Government investigations and measures

The shooting took place at the facilities of the Ateneo de Zamboanga educational center, an institution that has suspended its academic activities to fully cooperate with the investigation. The city’s mayor, Khymer Adan Olaso, confirmed that the attacker entered the premises carrying a rifle and a handgun, in addition to his broadcasting equipment.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered a thorough investigation and the strengthening of school security protocols to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.

On the other hand, the Customs Office has taken preventive measures by removing the minor’s father, who is a state official, from his position while it is determined whether there was negligence and whether the weapon used belonged to the parent’s personal arsenal.

A growing debate about security and social media

This event adds to other violent incidents recently recorded in Philippine educational centers, which has led lawmakers to question the role of digital platforms. Among the actions currently being discussed in Congress are:

  • The possible restriction of minors’ access to social networks.
  • The implementation of mandatory age verification systems by digital platforms.
  • The analysis of the relationship between the consumption of violent video games and aggressive behavior.

Although the Philippines has strict regulations for gun ownership, which include psychiatric and handling tests, the circulation of illegal weaponry remains a persistent challenge for local authorities. The government is now seeking to implement more forceful measures to protect the student community from constant exposure to radicalized and violent content on the internet.
