Tourism in the Dominican Republic: David Collado bets on road modernization and sustainability
The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, has set a new roadmap for the sector in the Dominican Republic. After surpassing historic visitor numbers, the official emphasized that the country must transcend the celebration of records to focus on a stage of greater security, organization, and sustainability, with a vision projected toward the year 2036.
This change in approach is materialized with the launch of the National Tourist Road Signage Plan, an initiative executed in conjunction with RD Vial. The project seeks to modernize and standardize signage on the country’s main routes and points of interest, updating a manual that had not received modifications since 1984.
We are no longer going to continue multiplying and celebrating records. Now we have to take different steps. We must take concrete steps and have a much safer destination.
David Collado, Minister of Tourism
Infrastructure and road safety
The investment for this project amounts to approximately RD$1.2 billion through RD Vial. The improvement in signage is a direct response to the needs of tourists who use digital navigation tools, thus ensuring greater peace of mind and efficiency in their travels.
- Initial scope: The plan will cover key provinces such as La Altagracia, El Seibo, Samaná, Puerto Plata, Pedernales, María Trinidad Sánchez, and Santiago.
- Safety: Priority will be given to reducing accidents on the Bávaro highway, working hand-in-hand with Intrant and Digesett.
- Technological advancement: Artificial intelligence has been integrated into the official tourism platform, making it easier for visitors to plan routes and travel times intuitively.
Impact on communities
Beyond infrastructure, Collado underscored the importance of the tourism boom positively impacting the local population. The minister announced the implementation of a community tourism pilot plan, designed so that the economic benefits of the industry extend beyond hotel complexes.
With record results so far in 2026, the country is on track to surpass the 12 million visitor mark. This comprehensive strategy seeks to consolidate the nation as the undisputed tourism powerhouse of the Caribbean, ensuring that growth is lasting, organized, and equitable for all communities that host Dominican tourist attractions.
