RD Vial will boost road safety with 300 additional kilometers of solar lighting
The general director of RD Vial, Hostos Rizik Lugo, announced that the Dominican government will expand its highway modernization program with the installation of an additional 300 kilometers of lighting using solar-powered lamps. This initiative seeks to reinforce safety on main roads and optimize strategic corridors linked to the country’s tourism sector.
After having completed an initial phase of 300 kilometers already in operation, this second stage will prioritize high-traffic road arteries, such as the Duarte Highway, the Eastern Highway, and the Juan Pablo II road, which connects to the Samaná province. These actions are part of a comprehensive infrastructure plan that ranges from the construction of bypasses to the constant improvement of signage and preventive maintenance.
Cutting-edge infrastructure for tourism
Rizik highlighted that road development is a fundamental pillar for the growth of national tourism. Among the key projects, he mentioned the progress on the Ámbar highway, the bypasses in Baní, Azua, and Barahona, as well as the interventions on the Eastern Tourist Boulevard. High-traffic areas such as Punta Cana, Friusa, and Verón already have modernized infrastructure that guarantees safer transit for visitors and residents.
Maintenance and signage program
In collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, RD Vial has launched an ambitious maintenance program for horizontal and vertical signage. The goal is to overcome the historical backlog in this area and ensure that every road element, from cat’s eyes to guardrails, receives immediate attention in the event of any deterioration.
Any situation involving a sign, a damaged guardrail, road markings, or a cat’s eye should have an immediate response.

Strengthening roadside assistance
- Historical investment: More than RD$1 billion has been allocated to strengthen the roadside assistance service.
- Equipment: Incorporation of more than 400 new units, including tow trucks, ambulances, and mobile workshops.
- International attention: Work is underway to enable the 511 service in English, facilitating assistance for foreign tourists.
With these measures, RD Vial seeks to consolidate a “security ecosystem” in collaboration with the Tourist Police and Digesett. This institutional synergy not only protects drivers but also raises the Dominican Republic’s standards as one of the safest and best-connected tourist destinations in the region.
