Dominican Republic strengthens reintegration of returned migrants at regional forum
The Public Ministry of the Dominican Republic actively participated in the recent Exchange of Experiences and Best Practices held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This regional meeting brought together representatives from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic with the primary objective of optimizing care and socio-labor reintegration mechanisms for involuntarily returned migrants.
The Dominican delegation was led by the Court of Appeals Prosecutor General, Danissa Cruz Taveras, who heads the Department of Human Rights and the Unit for the Reintegration of Repatriates. During her speech, Cruz Taveras presented a detailed analysis of the current reality and the challenges faced by repatriated citizens when reintegrating into Dominican society.
A commitment to social reintegration
The event, held on September 8th and 9th, served as a platform to analyze Honduras’ Centralized Identification Mechanism. The agenda included various activities focused on improving identification, referral, and comprehensive support processes for those returning to the country, highlighting the following key points:
- Strengthening institutional capacities for migrant care.
- Exchange of lessons learned regarding the role of social observatories.
- Evaluation of strategies for integration into the local labor market.
- Field visits and collaborative technical working groups.
The participation of the Dominican Republic was positively valued by the organizers, who recognized the sustained efforts by the Public Ministry to guarantee dignified treatment and effective opportunities for involuntary returnees.
This conclave was developed under the framework of the PERSPECTIVAS project, an initiative funded by the German Cooperation through the German Development Bank (KfW) and executed by the Secretariat for Central American Social Integration (SISCA), with the technical support of Swisscontact. The central objective of this project is to transform the living conditions of returnees through concrete measures that facilitate their social and professional adaptation in their communities of origin.
