Colombian Betis footballers join humanitarian aid efforts following earthquake in Colombia
The Colombian players who play for Betis, forward Juan Camilo “Cucho” Hernández and midfielder Nelson Deossa, made an urgent call for international solidarity following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that recently affected their home country. From Spain, both athletes are seeking to mobilize support for the communities most affected by this natural disaster.
The Colombian people are very united when these situations happen. As they say out there, unity is strength; today is when we must be most united. Let’s hope they can find the missing people and that they can be alive.
Nelson Deossa, Betis midfielder
Deossa emphasized the importance of citizen collaboration in these critical moments, underlining that any contribution, no matter how small, is fundamental for the recovery of the impacted areas. For his part, “Cucho” Hernández highlighted that the country is now entering a complex phase of reconstruction, where the loss of homes and businesses has left many families in a situation of extreme vulnerability.
A call for reconstruction and solidarity
Hernández, a native of Pereira —one of the most affected cities—, shared the relief of knowing that his loved ones are safe, after experiencing moments of anguish due to the temporary disappearance of some relatives. The forward reiterated the commitment of the footballers to the cause:
- Open invitation to Colombians and foreigners to provide financial support.
- Recognition of the reconstruction work needed after the collapse of buildings and homes.
- Advance gratitude for the solidarity received from afar.
Both players expressed the helplessness they feel at not being able to be physically on the ground to collaborate in the relief efforts, but they assured that they maintain their commitment to provide financial aid and spread the need for humanitarian aid for their compatriots. The Betis squad thus joins the feeling of mourning and hope of an entire country that seeks to get back on its feet after the tragedy.
