New York strengthens security measures ahead of hurricane and extreme heat season
New York authorities have intensified their call for citizens to adopt preventive measures in the face of an increase in adverse weather phenomena. With the hurricane season active, the municipal administration underscores the importance of preparation for flash floods and heat waves, factors that pose a direct threat to the safety of New Yorkers.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized that, after facing various storms and severe weather events in recent years, prevention is the most effective tool. The city has identified that approximately 3.5 million people live in high-risk areas, with basement residents being one of the most vulnerable groups given the speed at which flooding can occur.
Flood strategies and stormwater management
To mitigate risks, the New York City Emergency Management Department has made guidance materials and evacuation plans available to the public. Authorities recommend that those residing in basement levels identify safe exit routes and be prepared to move to higher floors in the event of heavy rainfall.
The city allocates approximately $1 billion annually to stormwater management and infrastructure projects aimed at reducing the impact of storms and flooding.

As part of the action plan, community workshops are being held and the use of flood alarms is being promoted, which are technological devices designed to provide early warning of water entering homes.
Prevention against heat waves
Climate risk in the metropolis is not limited to water; extreme temperatures also demand urgent measures. With an average of 500 heat-related deaths annually in the city, the local government has expanded the network of cooling centers for the entire population.
