Blake Lively obtains partial judicial compensation after litigation with Justin Baldoni
A federal judge in New York has ruled that actress Blake Lively will receive approximately $407,000 in compensation to cover her legal expenses stemming from the legal dispute with director and actor Justin Baldoni. This figure, which includes $363,245 in attorney fees and $44,206 in costs, represents a mere 5% fraction of the more than eight million dollars that the performer had originally requested.
Judge Lewis Liman based his decision on the fact that, while the hourly rates of Lively’s attorneys were appropriate given the complexity of the litigation, the number of hours billed to request reimbursement was excessive. Likewise, the magistrate highlighted the lack of transparency in the documentation submitted, as the original invoices were not provided to support the petition.
Origin of the conflict and legal outcome
The legal confrontation between both public figures escalated at the end of 2024, when Lively filed a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department, alleging that she had suffered a smear campaign by Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios after reporting alleged episodes of sexual harassment during the production of the film It Ends with Us. For his part, Baldoni responded with a $400 million defamation lawsuit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, arguing that both attempted to manipulate the narrative to take creative control of the project.

After more than a year of tensions, the parties reached an out-of-court settlement last May, avoiding reaching the federal trial stage. Although the pact did not include direct financial compensation for any of those involved, the issue of legal costs remained under judicial arbitration.
Conflicting positions on the ruling
Lively’s legal representatives, Esra Hudson and Michael Gottlieb, described the outcome as a historic precedent. From their perspective, the dismissal of Baldoni’s $400 million lawsuit was a strategic victory that sought to protect the ability to report inappropriate conduct, emphasizing that the actress’s purpose was always accountability and not financial gain.
It should be noted that Lively’s request was based on a 2023 California law, specifically designed to protect individuals who report sexual harassment or assault from defamation lawsuits considered frivolous. Although Judge Liman ruled out the possibility of applying triple and punitive damages, the resolution closes a media and judicial chapter marked by a millionaire investment in legal services by both parties.
