The Public Prosecutor’s Office is intensifying investigations to dismantle the digital deception network orchestrated by Joan Manuel Jiménez Medina, the individual identified as the architect of a virtual scam that culminated in the tragic death of Emmanuel Contreras Medina. This case, which has shocked the Los Praditos sector, highlights the dangers of unverified transactions on digital platforms.
The triangulation strategy: How did the deception happen?
According to the details revealed in the indictment by prosecutor Vladimir Viloria, Jiménez Medina employed a sophisticated triangulation tactic on Facebook Marketplace. The scammer managed to capture the attention of Lenin Jhericop Núñez de León, who was offering an iPhone 15 Pro Max for 35,000 pesos. Simultaneously, the criminal impersonated the seller and contacted the victim, Emmanuel Contreras Medina, offering him the same device for an attractive price of 15,000 pesos.
- The scammer convinced the victim to make an immediate bank transfer.
- He deceived the real seller, assuring him that the payment would be made in person.
- He manipulated both individuals into meeting at the La Javilla baseball stadium, under completely contradictory premises.
The criminal maneuver created a parallel reality where the victim believed they had completed a legitimate purchase, while the seller, upon not receiving the agreed-upon money, interpreted the situation as a robbery, triggering the fatal confrontation.
The fatal outcome and the legal action
The encounter, which took place on July 1, 2026, ended in tragedy when Núñez de León, seeing that the young man was leaving with the device without having paid him, reacted violently using a bat. The blows received to the head caused Contreras Medina’s death on September 9.
Currently, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is maintaining a criminal proceeding against Núñez de León for voluntary manslaughter, following his capture at the Las Américas International Airport while he was attempting to leave the country. In parallel, the authorities are working on tracking bank accounts and digital communications to locate Joan Manuel Jiménez Medina, who will have to answer to justice for fraud and incitement to violence.
