India sends humanitarian aid to Colombia after devastating earthquake
The Government of India has responded promptly to the tragedy unfolding in Colombia, following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the western region of the country last Monday. With the aim of strengthening recovery and assistance efforts, New Delhi dispatched an initial shipment of 20 tons of essential supplies.
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed through his social media the shipment of this first batch, highlighting his nation’s commitment to the Colombian people during these difficult times. It is estimated that the aid will reach its destination in approximately 40 hours.
Essential supplies for those affected
The humanitarian aid sent by India is composed of essential items designed to address the most critical needs following the natural disaster. Among the highlighted supplies are:
- High-priority medications and medical equipment.
- Materials for temporary shelters.
- Personal hygiene items.
- Various essential products for immediate survival.
Colombia is very grateful to the Government of India for this decision. It is very unusual for countries at such a distance to have this gesture of friendship with these families who are suffering so much at this time.

Emergency context
The seismic movement, which had its epicenter in the vicinity of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, has left a regrettable toll of at least 265 people dead and nearly 3,500 injured. The situation has generated a displacement crisis, with hundreds of families spending the night in tents due to the fear of returning to their damaged homes.
With this gesture, India joins the list of nations that have expressed their solidarity with Colombia, among which Spain, Israel, Sweden, Turkey, the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, Ecuador, Japan, and Brazil stand out. This display of international support seeks to mitigate the impact of one of the most significant natural disasters the region has faced recently.
