Hurricane Polo threatens the Mexican coast with intense rain and high waves
Hurricane Polo continues to gain strength in the waters of the Mexican Pacific, keeping authorities on alert due to its rapid strengthening south of the coasts of Guerrero and Michoacán. According to the most recent meteorological reports, it is estimated that the weather phenomenon could escalate to category 2 during the early hours of this Tuesday, September 22.
The center of the cyclone was located 290 kilometers south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 470 kilometers south-southeast of Manzanillo, Colima. Currently, the system is recording maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h, with gusts reaching 185 km/h, moving eastward at a speed of 9 km/h.
Impact and risk areas
Polo’s trajectory has activated prevention protocols due to the forecast of significant rainfall in various regions of the country. Intense rains are expected, with accumulations of between 75 and 150 millimeters, in the following areas:
- Coast and south of Guerrero.
- Coast and south of Oaxaca.
- North of Nayarit.
- Center, south and east of Chiapas.
Likewise, very heavy rains of 50 to 75 millimeters are forecast for the states of Michoacán, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, and Tabasco. These weather conditions could be accompanied by electrical discharges and hail, increasing the risk of waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities urge the population to stay informed through official channels and strictly follow the recommendations issued by Civil Protection to safeguard physical integrity in the face of potential flooding.
Maritime conditions and surveillance
The phenomenon not only represents a danger due to the rains, but also due to adverse maritime conditions. Waves between 2 and 3 meters high are expected on the coasts of Michoacán and Guerrero, while waves of 1.5 to 2.5 meters are expected in Oaxaca. Likewise, an alert has been issued regarding the swell phenomenon on the coasts of Jalisco and Colima.
Given this situation, an active surveillance zone is maintained, covering from Técpan de Galeana, Guerrero, to Punta San Telmo, Michoacán. The agencies in charge of meteorological monitoring continue to closely track Polo’s evolution to update the public on any significant changes in its trajectory or intensity.
