Concern over increase in deaths in alleged shootouts

The Dominican Institute of Criminal Law (IDDP) has made an urgent call to national authorities to stop the alarming increase in deaths recorded during alleged exchanges of gunfire between civilians and agents of security agencies. The entity emphasized that all police action must be strictly adhered to the Constitution, current laws, and the principles of the Social and Democratic State of Law.

Figures that set off alarms

Following a detailed analysis of official statistics, the IDDP revealed concerning data regarding lethality in law enforcement interventions. According to the report, the figures reflect an upward trend that requires immediate attention:

  • During the first semester of 2026, 142 deaths were recorded in alleged exchanges of gunfire.
  • This figure represents an increase of 16.4% compared to the same period in 2025.
  • As of September 25, 45.5% of the homicides recorded in that month were classified under the Legal Intervention category, totaling 45 deaths of this type.

The IDDP urges public security agencies to review their operational protocols, ensuring that the use of force always remains within the margins of the Dominican legal framework and respecting the fundamental rights of citizens.
