Maritime tragedy in the Philippines: Human remains found after ferry fire
Search efforts in the Philippines have yielded discouraging results this Friday. Rescue teams managed to access the ferry that caught fire last Wednesday near the island of Coron, finding human remains in the economy accommodation section of the vessel. The incident has left a preliminary toll of five people dead and 84 missing, according to reports from the Philippine Coast Guard.
After more than 30 hours of intense efforts to extinguish the fire and control the dense column of smoke, specialized teams were able to board the vessel to conduct an initial inspection. Joy Dianne Gumatay, Strategic Communication officer for the Coast Guard, confirmed that the remains found are being analyzed by forensic experts from the National Police to determine the exact number of fatalities.
Adjustments to the number of missing persons and rescue of foreigners
The authorities slightly adjusted the number of missing persons, reducing it from 86 to 84, after confirming that two passengers on the official list did not board the vessel. So far, the official toll accounts for 43 people rescued alive.
Among the survivors are two Chilean citizens, a man and a woman, who were taken to a hospital after being rescued. According to local authorities, they were listed as the only foreigners on board, although the final passenger list is still under review.
The forensic unit is examining and counting the remains to determine the updated death toll.

Context of maritime accidents in the region
The fire occurred in the tourist province of Palawan, in the South China Sea, while the ferry was making a voyage from Manila. The images released by the coast guard show the magnitude of the incident, which consumed practically the entire structure of the ship.
This event adds to a worrying list of maritime accidents in the archipelago. The Philippines constantly faces challenges in its maritime safety, due to factors such as:
- Adverse weather conditions.
- Deficiencies in vessel maintenance.
- Recurrent non-compliance with safety regulations.
- Overloading of vessel cargo capacity.
Just last January, the sinking of another ferry carrying more than 350 passengers to the Mindanao region resulted in the loss of 66 lives, a reminder of the risks that persist in maritime transport in the area.
