Hansel García warns the PLD about the impact of Abel Martínez on its political future
Analyst and coordinator of the radio show Politikal, Hansel García, has sent a forceful message to the top leadership of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). According to García, the political organization is making a strategic error of great magnitude by underestimating the relevance and electoral weight held by the former mayor of Santiago and former presidential candidate, Abel Martínez.
Although Martínez has not made his registration in the organization’s current internal consultation official, the communicator emphasizes that the former leader remains the party’s most significant and recent electoral reference in the eyes of public opinion.
An analysis of the election results
When addressing the PLD’s performance in the past elections, where Martínez obtained nearly 10% of the votes, García was emphatic in absolving the former mayor of any responsibility for that result. The analyst maintains that the low vote count was not the product of an individual failure, but rather a lack of general mobilization of the PLD structure.
That 10-something percent was not Abel Martínez’s responsibility; it was the responsibility of all the PLD members who did not mobilize. His political figure did not emerge dragged or kicked from that electoral process.
Hansel GarcíaLegislative influence and internal control
García highlighted that Abel Martínez’s real power is strongly manifested within the National Congress. The analyst detailed that, in the current Chamber of Deputies, Martínez maintains direct control over a considerable portion of the purple party’s bench.
- Maintains direct influence over at least four legislators in the current bench.
- Among his allies in Congress is the current spokesperson for the PLD deputies’ bloc.
- Any significant decision in the Lower House inevitably goes through a consultation with his figure.
A key piece for the future of the PLD
Abel Martínez’s profile, described by García as a politician with an outstanding track record and a firm character, positions him as an indispensable actor for the party’s immediate future. Despite his defeat in the presidential race, the analyst recalled that Martínez maintains an undefeated record in local processes, which reaffirms his competitive capacity.
Finally, García concluded that, given the need to define new presidential projects or support future candidacies, the PLD will be forced to negotiate with Martínez, given his leadership position and his capacity for mobilization within the party structure.
