Tension at the UN: Delegates walk out of the Assembly during Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sparked a moment of high diplomatic tension in New York during his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. As he took the podium, dozens of international delegates chose to walk out of the hall in protest, leaving much of the chamber empty.

The atmosphere at the UN headquarters turned hostile from the beginning of the intervention. As diplomats left their seats, the hall became the scene of booing mixed with expressions of support for the Israeli leader, which forced the President of the General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman, to intervene on multiple occasions to call for order and resume the event’s protocol.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s response

Far from ignoring the snub, Netanyahu reacted firmly from the podium, issuing a direct challenge to those who decided to protest against his presence:

If there are other moral cowards who have not yet left the room, please leave now.

During his speech, the Israeli leader maintained that his country’s actions not only respond to its own security, but also benefit other nations. He further asserted that various world leaders express their gratitude to him in private for the measures taken against Iran.

Protest context

This diplomatic mobilization was previously organized by the Palestinian mission to the UN, which called on the different member states to make a collective exit from the hall at the moment Netanyahu was announced.

  • The protest reflects the growing international rejection of military operations in Gaza and the current situation in the West Bank.
  • Israel maintains its stance of rejecting accusations of genocide, insisting that its military maneuvers are aimed exclusively at Hamas militants.
  • The event consolidated itself as one of the moments of greatest political friction recorded during the current edition of the General Assembly.

Despite the notable absence of a significant portion of the audience, Netanyahu continued with his address, marking a milestone in the international agenda due to the visibility of the diplomatic protest on the UN stage.
