The Dominican community in Canada commemorates the Restoration between baseball and patriotism
In an event that fused patriotic fervor with a passion for the beautiful game, hundreds of Dominicans residing in Canada gathered to celebrate the 163rd anniversary of the Dominican Restoration. The activity, organized by the Institute of Dominicans and Dominican Women Abroad (INDEX), transformed a Major League Baseball game into a meeting point to strengthen national identity far from home.
The setting chosen for this commemoration was the baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees. Under the coordination of Yngrid Beard Mejía, head of INDEX in the region, the community gathered to honor the legacy of the Grito de Capotillo, a historical milestone that marked the beginning of the struggle for national sovereignty in 1863.
Unity and pride in Canadian lands
The day not only served to enjoy Dominican talent on the diamond, but also to strengthen ties among the diaspora. Families, business owners, and diplomatic representatives shared an atmosphere of unity, highlighting the presence of Consul Lucilo A. Santos and Raiza Rodríguez Sánchez, who accompanied the hundreds of compatriots present.
The celebration of our history transcends borders. This gathering is proof that, no matter where we are, our Dominican identity and pride in our roots remain intact.
Recognition of community merit
During the event, space was made to honor those who work for the well-being of Dominicans abroad. Luis “Cambumbo” Feliz was the subject of special recognition for his tireless work on the Santo Domingo Park project in Caledonia, a key initiative for the recreation and sense of belonging of fellow citizens in Canada.
- Prominent presence of figures such as Daniel Guerrero, José Cid, and the communicator Jorge de Jesús Núñez García.
- Institutional focus of INDEX to strengthen cultural and patriotic ties with the diaspora.
- Sports as a bridge for integration and national identity.
The event concluded with a message of unity, reaffirming the commitment of Dominican institutions to keep the flame of national culture alive. The celebration of August 16th in Canada demonstrated that the legacy of the restorers remains alive in every Dominican who, through their effort and dedication, holds the name of the Dominican Republic high in every corner of the world.
