Strategic changes at Ecopetrol: The President of Colombia seeks to consolidate his control over the oil company
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has set in motion a series of key moves for the leadership of Ecopetrol, the country’s most influential state-owned company and a benchmark in the Latin American energy market. The president’s strategy focuses on appointing two figures from his inner circle to decisive positions within the company.
For the presidency of the oil company, the name that is resonating the strongest is that of Joaquín Gutiérrez, a former business partner of De la Espriella. On the other hand, Carlos Suárez, who served as the main strategist during the presidential election campaign, has been proposed by the Executive to be part of the new board of directors.
Profiles with no experience in the hydrocarbon sector
The proposal has generated notable controversy, mainly because neither of the two candidates has previous experience in the hydrocarbon industry. Gutiérrez’s professional background has been developed mostly in the construction and health sectors, in addition to his career at the current president’s law firm.
The presidency of Ecopetrol is a position of high operational responsibility, considering that the company contributes nearly 2% of Colombia’s gross domestic product and manages a workforce that, together with its contractors, exceeds 80,000 people.
Internal debate and government influence
Within the presidential cabinet, there are conflicting visions. Sectors aligned with Vice President José Manuel Restrepo have advocated for the need to integrate profiles with a technical and industrial background that guarantee operational efficiency. However, De la Espriella’s directive to prioritize political loyalty and personal trust to lead the state-owned company has prevailed.
The next shareholders’ meeting, scheduled for September 15, will be the setting where the new composition of the board of directors will be defined. Given that the Government holds 88.5% of the shares, it has the capacity to appoint six of the nine members, which ensures that the president’s vision will have a decisive weight in the final election of the new president of Ecopetrol.
