Alleged mugger of women dies after confrontation with Police in Santiago

A man, identified as Edilio Rafael Salcedo Paulino, 41, lost his life last Saturday night following an exchange of gunfire with agents from the Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim) in the Villa Liberación sector, located in the La Otra Banda area, Santiago.

The individual, who had an active arrest warrant, was being actively sought by authorities due to his alleged involvement in a series of assaults that were keeping the citizens of Santiago in a state of anxiety.

Case background

Salcedo Paulino became the primary target of police investigations after various videos circulated on digital platforms. In said recordings, a man was observed intercepting and robbing women of their belongings as they were commuting to their workplaces in different sectors of the city.

The audiovisuals generated a wave of concern among residents, due to the violence and public exposure with which the robberies were committed in broad daylight on public roads.

Operation details

  • The confrontation occurred during a location operation led by Dicrim agents in the Villa Liberación sector.
  • After being wounded in the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was taken to a health center, where his death was subsequently certified.
