Strong 7.2 magnitude earthquake shakes the Ayacucho region in Peru

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded this Thursday at 1:00 pm, triggering alerts in various regions of Peruvian territory. According to technical reports, the epicenter was located 35 kilometers north of Coracora, in the province of Parinacochas, Ayacucho, at a depth of 108 kilometers.

Due to the depth of the event, the seismic movement was perceived with an undulating character in much of the south of the country, reaching regions such as Arequipa, Ica, Cusco, and Apurímac. Even in Lima, citizens reported having felt the earthquake, mainly in the city’s taller structures.

Damage assessment and official response

So far, authorities have not reported any fatalities or serious structural damage. Hernando Tavera, head of the corresponding technical agency, explained that the depth of the earthquake helped mitigate the destructive impact on the surface, although he warned about the possibility of landslides on roads due to the magnitude of the event.

We may have road landslides, although the depth reduces the probability of critical damage. Authorities continue to evaluate the potential impacts in the most vulnerable areas.

For his part, the mayor of Parinacochas, Yony Reyes Anampa, confirmed that local brigades are deployed monitoring homes, especially those built with precarious materials such as adobe, which represent a greater risk. The official highlighted that the population has reacted with calm and order, following the established safety protocols.

Prevention and safety measures

  • No tsunami alert has been issued for the Peruvian coast following the event.
  • The population is advised to remain calm and follow the marked evacuation routes.
  • It is essential to have an emergency backpack equipped with water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a radio, and a first aid kit.
  • Avoid using elevators during and after the seismic movement.

Peru, being located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, maintains constant vigilance over its seismic activity. Authorities urge citizens to strengthen the culture of prevention and to stay informed only through official channels to avoid the spread of rumors.
