Joshua Báez: From a historic MLB debut to the doors of the Hall of Fame

Dominican rookie Joshua Báez has shaken the foundations of Major League Baseball following an unprecedented performance. His historic three-home run day in his first game at the highest level has captured the attention of the Cooperstown Hall of Fame, an institution that has already shown interest in preserving the items used by the player during his feat.

The most curious thing about this story is that the equipment with which Baez made history wasn’t even his. Upon arriving at Wrigley Field, the Cardinals prospect did not have the proper footwear, so his teammate Bryan Torres stepped in to outfit him. After searching through the lockers, Torres managed to find some clean size 12 spikes belonging to Blaze Jordan, as well as additional accessories from other team members.

If you look good, you smell good, you feel good, you play good.

Torres’ phrase turned out to be premonitory. With borrowed spikes, Báez hit a home run on his first Major League pitch against Matthew Boyd, reaching a distance of 449 feet. Subsequently, he added two more homers, consolidating a performance that left the baseball world astonished.

An unexpected legacy in Cooperstown

The Hall of Fame has formally requested the Dominican player’s equipment, including the famous spikes that have Blaze Jordan’s last name engraved on the inside. Upon the request, the original owner of the shoes joked about the fact that something with his name could be exhibited in the baseball museum.

For his part, Báez is still cautious about parting with his lucky charm: “I hope I can keep using them. The people in Cooperstown want to take them, but we’ll see what happens,” the player commented regarding the possibility of handing over his equipment.

Cardinals manager, the Dominican Óliver Mármol, praised Báez’s ability to adapt to different types of pitches and field directions. “Fastball, slider, changeup. You go to center field, then you pull the ball, and then you hit to the opposite field. It’s quite extraordinary,” the strategist stated.

As Báez prepares to prove that his explosive start was no fluke, baseball remains expectant regarding the future of this young talent, whose story has already begun to write golden pages in the Major League record books.
