Mental health in the Dominican Republic: A growing challenge that demands immediate action
Mental health in the Dominican Republic is going through a critical moment. According to records from the Observatory of Mental Health and Well-being, emotional disorders have experienced an accelerated increase, currently placing them above traditional physical pathologies such as diabetes and cancer. Anxiety and depression head this worrying list, accounting for nearly 75% of clinical diagnoses in the country.
Determining factors in the emotional crisis
Researcher Zoilo García, who leads the Emotion, Health and Cyberpsychology Laboratory, warns that this issue is no longer an individual matter but has become a public health challenge. According to the observatory’s findings, the phenomenon is multicausal and responds to a complex network of factors:
- Socioeconomic pressures: Financial instability and environmental conditions directly impact emotional balance.
- Environmental and social factors: Prolonged exposure to citizen insecurity, violence, and community stress erodes family well-being.
- Digital environment: Constant consumption of information about crises and violence through mobile devices and digital platforms fosters a state of collective alertness and unease.
It is not just about figures in institutional reports, but about daily realities: young people living with chronic anxiety, families marked by traumatic losses, and communities facing accumulated stress that silently erodes their well-being.

Towards a national prevention strategy
Given this landscape, the need to strengthen public policies is evident. The Mental Health and Well-being Observatory, created with the goal of generating scientific evidence, seeks for the data obtained to serve as a roadmap for responsible institutions to implement effective prevention strategies and guarantee broader access to psychological care services.
The current approach, supported by experts, suggests that to improve the emotional well-being of Dominicans it is imperative:
- Reduce the stigma associated with seeking professional help.
- Integrate psychological care as an essential part of comprehensive healthcare.
- Foster collaboration between academia, the public sector, and social organizations.
- Develop community environments that promote stability and reduce risk factors.
Scientific research will continue to be the primary tool for monitoring the evolution of these disorders. Alofoke Deportes will closely follow developments in this field, reaffirming that mental health is a fundamental pillar for the development and quality of life of our society.
