Anthony Richardson Suffers Shoulder Injury Setback and Misses Practice
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has suffered a setback in the right shoulder injury that sidelined him for the 2023 season, coach Shane Steichen announced this Thursday.
Richardson, who was in the midst of a competition for the starting position with veteran Daniel Jones, will be out of action for an indefinite period. Steichen reported that Richardson missed the three practices of the week and will not participate in next week’s mandatory minicamp. The coach did not want to commit on whether Richardson will be ready for the start of training camp, which begins on July 22.
The news comes after Richardson approached the coaches last week reporting shoulder discomfort. After an evaluation, the doctors determined that he had suffered an aggravation of the AC joint, which he injured in his rookie season.
We’re not going to put a timeline on the training camp, but when he returns, we’ll gradually incorporate him into the launch and then see how he progresses.

It is unknown whether this type of discomfort is normal for players with previous injuries to the AC joint, according to Steichen.
This situation represents a significant setback for Richardson in his battle for the starting position against Jones. Richardson has missed 17 games in two seasons due to injuries, including 12 games due to the previous shoulder injury.
The Colts also relegated him to the bench in two games last season, opting for veteran Joe Flacco.
Selected in the fourth overall position in 2023, Richardson arrived with the hope of becoming Indianapolis’ franchise quarterback. However, his injury problems have affected those expectations. Before this injury, Steichen commented that Richardson “was in very good shape. He was throwing well. The meetings were good. He was progressing very well.”
This injury, considering its timing, is one of the biggest blows for Richardson. The Colts, dissatisfied with Richardson’s progress in his second year, decided to add “competition” to their quarterback unit and did so with a one-year, $14 million contract for Jones.
The former Giants first-round pick, who was unsuccessful in New York, accepted the Colts’ offer with the mindset of having the opportunity to revive his career. Richardson’s injury gives him the chance to do so.
Daniel will have many repetitions and then we’ll see how it develops.

Richardson’s struggles on the field weren’t the only factor that prompted the Colts to address the quarterback position. Richardson’s injury history also played a role.
In the absence of Richardson, Riley Leonard, selected in the sixth round, will take the second spot. The Colts will not make any moves in the quarterback roster for now, according to Steichen.
