Mauricio Báez Crowned TBS District Champion and Makes History

The Mauricio Báez club has inscribed its name in golden letters in the history of Dominican basketball. This Tuesday, the team won its 11th championship by defeating San Carlos with a score of 99-75, consolidating a 4-1 in the final series of the National District Superior Basketball Tournament (TBS Distrito). This triumph not only gives them the title, but also makes them the all-time winner in this prestigious tournament. The victory of the Villa Juana team breaks the historical tie they had with San Carlos, marking a new milestone in local basketball.

Gerardo Suero Brilló and Was Named MVP

Gerardo Suero led the Mauricio Báez offense with 20 points, a performance that earned him recognition as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final, the third in his career in district finals. His brother Juan Miguel Suero contributed 14 points, while Luismal Ferreiras added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Richard Bautista (“Manito”) also stood out with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, key in the defense of the champion team. From San Carlos, Bearden Lamonte was the top scorer with 16 points. Eddy Polanco and Tyran De Lattibeaudiere contributed 15 points each.

A Historic Celebration in Villa Juana

The celebration transcended the court, infecting the Mauritian fans in the capital, provinces, and the Dominican diaspora, who followed every moment of the championship through the live broadcast. After losing the first game of the series, Mauricio Báez reacted with determination, winning four consecutive games and securing the championship at the Ricardo Gioriber Arias Volleyball Palace of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.

Historical Domain and Three-peat

The Mauricio Báez and San Carlos had shared the top with 10 titles each. Since 1974, both teams have starred in a legendary rivalry, with a 3-3 balance in final series, but now the Villa Juana team leads in championships. The 2025 title completes a three-peat, adding to the victories of 2023 and 2024, all under the direction of Melvyn López, who adds his eighth championship, a record for a coach in the league. It’s the second time that Mauricio achieves three consecutive crowns, emulating its streak from 1984 to 1987.
