Pemex responds to new hydrocarbon leak in the Gulf of Mexico
Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has recently confirmed an environmental incident at its facilities located in the Gulf of Mexico. The hydrocarbon leak was detected in a pipeline located 46 nautical miles north of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, immediately activating safety and containment protocols by the state-owned company.
According to the official report, the spill began last Thursday, September 10. The company stated that no injuries to operational personnel or damage to coastal areas have been recorded. As corrective measures, the affected pipeline was depressurized to stop the leak, while specialized teams continue with recovery and inspection efforts in the maritime area.
Environmental monitoring and projections
The Permanent Observatory of the Gulf of Mexico, the entity in charge of monitoring these incidents, has indicated that, according to current drift models, the hydrocarbon slick is moving westward, away from the Mexican coast. Simulations suggest that it is unlikely that the spill will impact sensitive areas in the next five days.
According to the simulations performed, it is very unlikely that it will reach the coast or any sensitive area during this period, although projections will continue given the possibility that, in the next 10 days, the drift may change course due to the possible arrival of a cold front.

So far, the authorities have not provided details regarding the exact volume of crude oil spilled, the length of time the leak remained active, or the total dimensions of the slick detected at sea.
Background of incidents at Pemex
This event is part of a series of environmental incidents recorded at Pemex facilities over the last year. Among the most notable cases are:
- The spill that occurred in April 2026 at the Cantarell complex, which led to federal investigations and the dismissal of officials.
- The contamination reported in March of the same year, linked to illegal dumping and emissions in the Bay of Campeche.
- The recovery of more than 2.5 million liters of hydrocarbon in the Pantepec River, Veracruz, following a leak in the Poza Rica–Madero pipeline in October 2025.
