Monte Plata kicks off the 2026-2027 school year with more than 54 thousand students
Regional Education Office 17 has officially launched the 2026-2027 school year in the province of Monte Plata, welcoming an enrollment that exceeds 54,000 students. This educational deployment covers the municipalities of Yamasá, Monte Plata, Bayaguana, Sabana Grande de Boyá, and Peralvillo, integrating the various levels and modalities of the public system.
The distribution of the student population is broken down as follows:
- Initial Level: 7,422 students.
- Primary Level: approximately 25,000 students.
- Secondary Level: around 17,000 students.
- Youth and Adult Subsystem: nearly 4,000 students.
Significant advances in learning
During the opening ceremony, the authorities highlighted the success of the Con Base Program during the previous school year. The indicators reflect notable progress in the reading proficiency of third-grade students, achieving an increase in the percentage of fluent reading from 24.70% to 56.49% in just eight months, positioning Regional 17 as one of the best-performing in the entire country.
The goal for this new academic period is to intensify pedagogical support and provide specialized backing to those students who still require further assistance to consolidate their learning processes.
Challenges and demands of the teaching sector
Despite the formality of the start of classes, the education sector is facing a scenario of tensions. A group of teachers and technicians maintains a series of labor demands that include the payment of retroactives for performance evaluation and a deep review of the evaluation processes, which they consider were not executed with the necessary equity.
Additionally, the teachers’ union has focused on school infrastructure, demanding the completion and repair of several facilities in the province. These conditions are pointed out as fundamental to ensuring a dignified and safe environment for both the student body and the administrative and teaching staff.
