Previously, Matteo Berrettini also contributed to the Italian triumph by defeating Jurij Rodionov with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4). Berrettini demonstrated his ability to react by coming back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set, managing to break his opponent’s serve in the ninth game and saving three set points before securing the victory in the tiebreak.
Italy, currently at the top of the ranking, seeks its third consecutive title and the fourth in its history.
The Italian team has maintained an impressive streak, accumulating 12 consecutive victories in the Davis Cup since their last defeat in the group stage of 2023.
The four-time Grand Slam champion, Jannik Sinner, who led Italy to victory in 2023 and 2024, decided not to participate in this edition of the Davis Cup.
The event in Bologna represents the sixth edition of the renewed Davis Cup format, where the champion is defined in a neutral venue.
Spain will face the Czech Republic, while Germany will play against Argentina in the last two quarter-finals on Thursday.
